ARTIST BIO
Carlos Betancourt (b. 1966, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Miami-based multidisciplinary artist celebrated for his vibrant and layered works that blend themes of identity, nature, nostalgia, and cultural symbolism. His exploration of the human connection to place and memory is central to much of his body of work. With a career spanning over three decades, Betancourt’s work has been widely exhibited in leading museums and galleries, and is included in prestigious permanent collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
His art has been featured in major international art fairs, including Art Basel, Zona MACO (Mexico), and ARCO (Madrid), and profiled in prominent publications such as The New York Times, ARTnews, Artforum, Gagosian Quarterly, Art in America, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2015, Skira Rizzoli published Carlos Betancourt: Imperfect Utopia, a comprehensive monograph chronicling his artistic journey. In addition to his fine art practice, Betancourt has worked as a curator and furniture designer, and has collaborated with luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Barneys New York. His most recent venture includes a commissioned wallpaper series with Casamonte. He has also collaborated extensively with architect Alberto Latorre on both public and private site-specific commissions.
Deeply inspired by nature, Betancourt draws creative energy from his gardens—articularly in Miami and the Puerto Rican rainforest—as well as from extended stays in the Cycladic Islands of Greece and Careyes in Costa Alegre, Mexico. Together with Latorre, he co-founded 801 Projects and the Betancourt-Latorre Foundation, initiatives dedicated to supporting artists in Miami and across the Caribbean basin. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous awards.
