CARLOS BETANCOURT COLLECTION
CARLOS GARDEN
At the heart of this collection is the lush tropical landscape of my Caribbean upbringing in Puerto Rico. This natural beauty has long served as a wellspring of inspiration—most notably embodied in Carlos’s Garden, a creative sanctuary I have cultivated for years within the El Yunque rainforest, with the support of close friends. This living garden is a source of constant imagination and now deeply influences the designs of this wallpaper collection.
I was raised surrounded by the rich flora of the Caribbean—banana plants, malangas (commonly known as elephant ears), and monsteras. I remember being captivated by the immense scale of banana leaves; they felt almost prehistoric, as if offering shelter and quiet strength. As a child, I was also drawn to the elegance of Art Deco wallpaper designs that celebrated these grand, tropical forms.
Malangas covered our backyard in Puerto Rico, lovingly planted and cared for by my grandmother—her favorite plant. She had once grown them in her backyard in Cuba as well. “Malanga” was likely one of the first words I ever heard. I have vivid memories of those gleaming green leaves climbing and unfolding in every corner of our home, sparking my imagination with visions of mysterious jungles. I would play with my toys beneath their canopy, enchanted by their curving shapes and protective presence.
Today, banana plants and malangas remain ever-present in Carlos’s Garden, as well as in our beloved Careyes, Mexico and our home in Miami. Through this collection, I seek to recreate the emotion and spirit these plants evoke—a sense of being embraced by nature. This is my heartfelt tribute to their enduring symbolism, rooted in personal memory and inspired by the raw beauty and authenticity of life in the Caribbean.
